The investigation into the fire at C&C Salvage continues as the Indiana State Fire Marshall has been called into determine the origin and cause of the massive inferno Thursday night.
Eight fire departments responded to the scene to attempt to put out the fire. Thick black smoke billowed from the business at the corner of U.S. 35 and Toto Road, south of Knox.
The fire destroyed the business that was once shut down in 2012 after an injunction order was filed in Starke Circuit Court. An investigation reportedly found that C&C Salvage did not have the proper permits to conduct business there.
In October of 2012, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management conducted an investigation and reportedly found that C&C Salvage and other businesses owned by James Campbell violated environmental management laws and rules, and the department proposed an Agreed Order constituting a settlement.
Bass Lake firefighters were called back to the scene Friday afternoon to put out a few hot spots that had popped up.
Bass Lake Fire Chief Les Jensen told WKVI that a cause could be released next week. The situation will require extensive analysis.
