A LaPorte man was arrested early last week after police found him in possession of a stolen handgun.
LaPorte police conducted a traffic stop after they found that Nathan E. Harrison, 33, had disregarded a stop sign at Hillcrest Street and Southmoor Avenue.
During the traffic stop, officers allegedly found Harrison to be operating his vehicle under the influence and they observed a handgun in plain view in an open glove box. The gun had been reported stolen earlier in the day.
Not only did Harrison not have a permit to carry the weapon, but he is ineligible to possess a firearm.
He was transported to the LaPorte County Jail and booked on preliminary charges of possession of a firearm by a violent felon as a Class B felony and receiving stolen property as a Class D felony. He was also booked on preliminary misdemeanor charges of operating while intoxicated and carrying a firearm without a permit.
