Starke County now has a parks and recreation board. The Starke County Council established the body to oversee amenities like the Bass Lake Beach and Campground, Starke County Forest and other county-owned recreational areas.
The vote to do so was 4 to 1, with Freddie Baker opposed. Questions were raised previously about the county’s obligations to fund such a body. The law allows for county funding but does not require it, according to county attorney Marty Lucas. Additionally, he says having a board in place qualifies the county to receive grant money. Commissioners Kathy Norem and Jennifer Davis also spoke in favor of setting up a board. Norem said it provides greater accountability at the beach and campground. No members have been named yet. The council and circuit judge each have two appointments, and the commissioners have one.
