You can check to see if you are eligible for an excise tax refund on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle’s website.
BMV Commissioner Don Snemis said letters have been sent to those who are eligible but in case you didn’t receive a claim form, access the refund eligibility page at www.myBMV.com. A “Check Your Excise Tax Refund Eligibility” icon can be found on the right side of the page and users will be asked for a Social Security Number or Driver’s License Number in order to check eligibility.
Officials sent out forms in October after they found a miscalculation in the excise tax. The BMV issued 185,252 claims to customers totaling $28.59 million. To date, 131,000 claim forms have been received and 92,700 claims have been processed.
After all reasonable means of locating customers entitled to refunds have been exhausted, refunds will be turned over to the Indiana Attorney General’s Indiana Unclaimed program.
