A murder victim will be remembered today in her home town. Kristine Williams, 36, was found in an abandoned house in Gary on Sunday, Oct. 19. Police there say accused serial killer Darren Vann, 43, has confessed to killing her and six other women. Williams grew up in Knox and would have graduated from Knox High School in 1997. A service will take place this morning 11 a.m. at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox.
Survivors include her father, Knox Planning Commission Board Administrator Bruce Williams, five children, a grandson, a brother and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her mother, Gathel (Peters) Williams.
Investigators with the Lake County Coroner’s Office confirm Williams died as the result of strangulation and have classified her death as a homicide. They have yet to determine when she was killed. Vann has been formally charged in two of the seven deaths. Additional charges are expected once the investigation into the homicides is complete.
