The recently-formed Starke County Park Board will consider whether to allow seasonal camping at Bass Lake Campground when they meet this evening. The five-member board has been tasked with oversight of the beach and campground, Starke County Forest and other non-municipal recreational areas in the county.
The state deeded the beach and campground to the county several years ago. Businessman Richard Callahan has a contract with the county to manage the amenities. Questions have arisen about whether extended campsite leases are allowed. State-owned campgrounds have limits in place, but those rules do not apply since the property now belongs to the county. Tonight’s meeting starts at 6 p.m. CST at the Starke County annex building.
