The effort to regulate the placement of construction dumpsters within the Knox city limits took a step forward last night with passage of an ordinance on first reading. It sets limits on how long dumpsters can be kept on a property and establishes registration requirements for the sake of accountability and liability should an accident occur.
Council members also discussed the use of dumpsters at homes within the city limits as trash bins and decided that issues needs to be addressed by the city plan commission. They noted dumpsters left indefinitely become storage bins for garbage and attract vermin.
The council tabled consideration of a rental property ordinance after realizing the changes necessary to comply with state law are more involved than they initially thought. City attorney David Matsey will continue working on that policy between now and the next board meeting.
