Department of Revenue Continuing Security Measures During Tax Season

The Indiana Department of Revenue says greater security measures will be in place once again to prevent identity theft.

According to a press release, the alleged criminal perpetrators attempted to steal more than $88-million from taxpayers through ID theft and fraudulent tax returns last year.

Security measures will also be in place during the 2015 tax season – which starts Tuesday. An identity confirmation quiz that takes about two minutes will be involved to ensure adequate protections.

The report says the theft amount is out of $800-million in requested refunds. 74-thousand fraudulent returns were also identified.

The state’s Department of Revenue, however, says their security measures were able to alert residents their identities had been stolen.

Resources are available for Hoosiers who believe they may have been affected.
