Culver Traffic Stop Leads to Officer Struggle, Vehicle Pursuit

Culver Police identified a suspect that led to an arrest after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of a few items believed to be associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine.

The incident happened the evening February 17th on State Road 10 near the Family Dollar store in Culver. Officers say they viewed the vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Lance Walter, to be speeding. A traffic stop was initiated where Walter was subsequently asked to exit the vehicle.

According to a release from the Culver Police Department, the officer was alerted that the subject had a razor blade in his possession. The officer says Walter was not complying with demands and a struggle allegedly ensued.

Walter tried to reach for the officer’ duty weapon according to police, but the officer was able to maintain the firearm in its holster. Pepper spray was used, but Walter went back to the vehicle and fled the scene. Motorists driving by the scene stopped in an attempt to help the officer.

Law enforcement from other agencies, including Rochester, Fulton County Sheriff’s, and Indiana State Police located the vehicle and were involved in a pursuit. That chase ended near the area of East 9th Street in Rochester

Walter was arrested in Fulton County for Resisting Law Enforcement and charges pertaining to methamphetamine. Marshall County has filed formal charges, including felony counts of Escape from Lawful Detention, Attempting to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Law Enforcement, and violations pertaining to the traffic stop.
