The new Starke County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center is still on schedule to open this spring. A public open house is tentatively planned for Friday, May 22, and inmates will be transferred to the facility on June 1. The building is located east of Knox on State Road 8 at County Road 550 East.
Prior to the opening, county officials plan to hire a part-time maintenance person for the building. The new hire will need to be trained on the high-tech cells, fire suppression system and other sophisticated electronics and state-of-the-art equipment at the site. The Starke County Commissioners gave Sheriff Bill Dulin permission to post the position immediately. It will pay between $15 and $20 per hour, depending on experience. The job will be part-time initially but will eventually become a full-time position as the facility gets older.
