Several families from Indiana were honored by an area state representative last week after keeping agriculture in the family.
State Representative Doug Gutwein congratulated three families on receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The families received the award from Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann. The program was started in 1976.
According to a press release, the Homestead award recognizes families who have owned the same farm for 100 years or more. The Kruger Farm is located in Pulaski County and has been in operation since 1913. It was given the centennial award.
More than 5-thousand farms have been recognized in the state as part of the program.
Farms operating longer than 100 years could receive different awards for 150 and 200 years of ownership.
Gutwein said agriculture in the area continues to thrive because of their perseverance.
