To use a baseball analogy, construction of the Starke County Sheriff’s Department and Detention Center has rounded third base and is heading for home plate. That’s how Dion Katsouros from Skillman Corporation described the project to the Starke County Building Corporation during their monthly meeting.
County officials broke ground at the site east of Knox on State Road 8 in mid-November of 2013. Within the next few weeks the various project subcontractors will create and complete their punch lists to make sure everything is in order. Final cleaning and grading is ongoing, and a final asphalt surface coat will be laid as soon as plants reopen.
The project remains on schedule and on budget. A formal grand opening is scheduled for Friday, May 22 and will include public tours of the facility. Inmates will be moved into the new jail in early June.
