An investigation is ongoing, but the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department has identified the possible cause of a home explosion near Medaryville on Saturday morning.
The explosion not only destroyed the home and caused a structure fire that took several hours to mitigate, the materials collapsed into the home’s basement following the eruption. One woman was located in the rubble using a cadaver dog.
Investigators say it’s likely a preliminary cause of the explosion was a propane leak. A tank was situated next to the home in the area of 2505 North and 1600 West. Debris was scattered hundreds of feet from the site of the incident – which occurred around 7:30 a.m. EDT.
An autopsy was ongoing as of 11:00 a.m. EDT on Monday to properly identify the victim. Until that time, authorities are not making an identification.
According to a press release, a family pet was located at the scene with custody of the cat given to Pulaski County Animal Control. Family members are being sought to look after the animal.
