Officers from the LaPorte Police Department wrote 141 tickets for lack of seatbelt usage and 10 for lack of child restraint usage during a recent Click It or Ticket campaign. The 17-day enforcement period wrapped up over the weekend. LaPorte Police wrote a total of 197 citations and issued 118 warnings for things like texting, motorcycle license violations, driving while suspended, no driver’s license, speeding and other traffic violations. Officers also made two drunk driving arrests, according to a news release.
Captain Tom Heath says the campaign drives home the message that seatbelts save lives. He adds that’s a message officers will continue to spread all year long.
Information from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration indicates seatbelt usage in passenger cars in Indiana was 91.6 percent in 2013. Federal funds support the annual Click It or Ticket effort. More than 250 law enforcement agencies across the state take part.
