This weekend at the La Porte County fairgrounds Mark Waller,the Director of Horsemanship at Culver Military Academy, is instructing an equestrian course hosted by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Posse. Waller served as a member of the London Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Unit in England and will be covering various skills such as maintaining control under stressful circumstances, over coming obstacles,equitation and formations. North Judson K9 Officer Makes Drug Arrest
A Culver man and a Plymouth woman face drug charges after a Saturday traffic stop in downtown North Judson at the corner of Main and Luken Streets. Starke County Council Approves Purchase of New Court Software
Starke County will soon switch to a new court software program. IT Director Joe Short says the Windows-based Odyssey program will replace the DOS-based CSI program that’s currently in use. Wednesday is Ancilla Gives Day
Ancilla is hosting a 24 hour fundraiser on June 24th that encourages supporters to donate to the local junior college and assist them in finishing out the fiscal year strong. On this day people are prompted to make a donation of at least $24 to the Ancilla fund which provides financial aid to students. Ninety-three percent of Ancilla College students receive financial aid and 43 percent of student families are in a category that can afford zero dollars toward tuition. Continue reading

Embattled Veterans Service Officer Files Grievance Against County Commissioners
A Starke County employee who was relieved of his duties during Monday’s commissioners meeting has filed a grievance seeking to be reinstated. The commissioners voted 2-0 to replace Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner with Mark Gourley. Commissioner Don Binkley made the motion to terminate Turner, and President of the Commissioners Kent Danford seconded it. Commissioner Kathy Norem did not vote.

N.J.-S.P. School Board Reaffirms Support for Title 1 Program
The North Judson-San Pierre School Board this week reaffirmed support for the federal Title 1 program. It provides resources to schools with high percentages of students from low-income families to offer extra academic help. Local Fire Departments Receive Indiana Homeland Security Foundation Grants
Fire departments in LaPorte and and a town in Pulaski County are among the recipients of grants from the Indiana Homeland Security Foundation. Statewide more than $370,000 was given to 101 recipients in 61 counties for critical needs. Eligible projects include equipping emergency responders with personal protective equipment, acquiring equipment for use by emergency responders, providing radios and technology equipment and training for emergency responders. Superintendent Gappa Plans to Continue Work in Face of Contract Expiration
Knox Community Schools Superintendent A.J. Gappa says he plans to fulfill what remains of his contract.
Gappa spoke with WKVI News after it was learned he was provided written notice of non-renewal. That means members of the Knox School Board voted not to further extend the contract they have with the Superintendent during their meeting, Monday.
