The former director of the Walkerton Public Library was sentenced yesterday to 20 months in federal prison for misuse of funds. Court documents indicate Scott Klingerman, 45, used more than $26,000 in library funds to pay for vacations and health club memberships. Continue reading
A weekend tornado in Starke County was reported to have damaged crops slightly, but hail and the added rainfall may begin affecting production even more.
Storms have left fields a bit damp for farmers as standing water has been reported in fields throughout Starke and Pulaski County. Standing water begins to affect roots after a couple of days.

The Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana of Ivy Tech Community College is looking for innovators throughout the seven-county region they serve. Officials visited Kemin Industries in North Judson yesterday as part of a seven-county call for nominations tour. The Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team was the 2013-14 recipient of the Chanute Prize for Team Innovation. Local grower Ed Lambert partnered with Kemin Industries after learning about their aspirations to make a natural food additive during a spearmint growers convention. Continue reading
A preliminary route for the 2016 Indiana Bicentennial Torch to travel thru Starke County late afternoon and evening October 7, 2016, was the main topic of discussion of the Starke County Indiana Bicentennial Committee this week.
The torch will be primarily transported by people, passing the flame from torch bearer to to torchbearer. The local relay may also use other modes of conveyance that are symbolic of the history and heritage of Starke County, including watercraft, antique vehicles and railroad. Continue reading
Budget preparation season is getting closer in Pulaski County.
Auditor Sheila Garling provided a report last month showing every account in the fiscal year budget. She encouraged Pulaski County department heads to use their restricted funds more carefully as opposed to taking money out of the county General Fund.

The Culver Town Council may have to go back to the drawing board for work to the Town Hall’s Roof.
The Town accepted bids to upgrade the roof at the Town Hall as well as a second building. Work to the Town Hall was stopped, however, because the bid did not include the price of labor.

The hazardous waste collection event is located at 3835 East 250 North in Knox and runs Friday, June 12 from 3:30 until 5 pm and Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 am until 1 pm. The Culver Park Department is gearing up for new activities available on the water this summer.
The Town entered into an agreement earlier this year to provide Kayak and Paddleboard rentals for the season. After going through a bid process, Sail22 has been able to provide the equipment needed to participate.

The investigation into a Tuesday morning crash on U.S. 421 in LaPorte County that injured five people is continuing. Investigators with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department say a Ford Expedition driven by 44-year-old Patrick Michaels of Wanatah was northbound near Alida Road around 5:30 a.m. and collided with a southbound GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Vincent Fischer of Valparaiso. Officers say four passengers, 40-year-old Logan Fischer, 17-year-old Cheyenne Fischer and 10-year-old Duncan Fischer, all of Valparaiso, were passengers in the truck. Vincent, Logan and Duncan were the most critically injured and were flown to an area hospital. The other two were taken by ambulance for treatment. Continue reading

Officials with the National Weather Service were able to confirm an EF-1 Tornado touched down in western Starke County. Wind speeds were estimated at a maximum of 95 miles per hour.

The financial news website “24/7 Wall St.” compared the median household income of communities to the average in their state. According to their figures, Knox has a median income of $30,300, compared to $48,248 statewide. Continue reading
Probationary wages for new part-time EMS employees will be eliminated.
The Pulaski County Council on Monday night reviewed a revised salary ordinance which specifies wages for various positions. A committee worked to set wages for new hires, but council members had problems with the way starting pay for employees is set.

The Town of Culver has named their new EMS Director.
During last night’s Culver Town Council meeting, it was learned an offer had been extended for the position and accepted. Local paramedic Kathy Hart was named the new Culver EMS Director.

Neglected and abused children across Starke County are frequently removed from their homes because their parents cannot or will not properly take care of them. The Starke County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program provides those children with caring volunteers who serve as a voice and guiding hand in the court system. Continue reading
During the Eastern Pulaski School Board meeting Monday evening, the board decided without any opposition to refinance the school’s pension bonds. Back in 2006, the state allowed schools to take out bonds to pay off their pension obligations, that money still needs to be repaid. With this resolution, the school will be taking advantage of lower interest rates to reduce the cost and still pay the bonds off in the same amount of time. Continue reading
American flags that may have seen better days will be retired this weekend in Knox.
The VFW Post 748 is asking the public to bring their worn flags to an annual ceremony on Sunday. The service will be dedicated to retiring American flags that have lived past their usefulness.
