The improvement of the downtown area in Hamlet was discussed Wednesday night by the Town Board with business owner Lee Nagai.
Nagai is remodeling a downtown business building and is an advocate for the installation of conduit to serve new street lights in the area over the next several years. The lights may be financed by offering sponsorship to businesses and individuals. Continue reading →
At their Monday evening meeting, the North Judson Town council spoke about excess items in the former fire department building which is now the community center. Some old items have accumulated in the building and are no longer being used. The Council decided to include these items in the town-wide yard sale on August 8th. Continue reading →

The proposed route through Starke County for travel of the Indiana Bicentennial torch in October of 2016, has not yet been confirmed. Starke County Committee chairperson, Councilman David Pearman, says the routes are being confirmed by the state committee, county by county, according to the order of torch travel. Hackers are accessing personal info by using misleading text messages as well as spy apps. “Spy apps” are designed to help parents keep track of their children or reduce the likelihood of infidelity in relationships, however some people misuse them to access your email, text messages, call logs and even your current location. Unfortunately these apps are hard to detect and run invisibly in the background, fortunately there must be a physical installation. So as long as you know and trust anyone who has access to your phone, this is not something you should be worried about.
A man recently released from prison, and convicted of murder and child molesting, has a history in the Pulaski County Court system.
67-year-old Richard Dobeski was let out of an Indiana Department of Corrections Facility in New Castle this month. He was convicted on two counts of murder dating back to 1965.

The progress of maintenance and capital improvements at the Bass Lake Beach were reviewed with lessee Richard Callahan when the Starke County Park Board convened last evening. Callahan was accompanied by his legal counsel, David Wallsmith. Callahan reported that 10 tons of sand and 10 tons of asphalt grindings has been spread to improve the grounds and that 45 picnic tables had been repaired. Continue reading →

The Kasey Program uses black Labrador Retrievers to teach children practical safety methods in a memorable way. Former Starke County Veterans Service Officer Terry Turner has filed an age discrimination claim against the county commissioners over his recent termination. He was fired during the June 15th county commissioners meeting. Turner, 67, advises WKVI News he filed a claim on Friday, July 10th with the state civil rights commission office in South Bend, and it has been forwarded to Indianapolis for review. Starke County’s new sanitarian will earn considerably less per hour than his predecessor after action last night by the county council. Health nurse Frank Lynch asked the council to lower the wage for the position from $20.28 per hour to $18.50 to start. After 90 days and a successful performance evaluation it will go up to $19.00 and top out at $19.50. Lynch says this is consistent with what other counties pay for the same position and addresses the salary discrepancy between that job and his as head of the health department.
