Dermody Named Vice Chair of Public Policy Interim Study Committee
A local lawmaker will spend his legislative break looking into whether smoking should be banned in bars, casinos and private clubs, among other topics. Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, will serve as vice chairman of the Interim Study Committee on Public Policy. Blueberry Business Affected by Abundance of Rainy Weather
Here in Indiana, we have experienced an exceptionally rainy summer season. The amount of rainfall that Hoosiers received in June broke a previous record that had been held since the 1950s. The abundance of rainfall can potentially have adverse affects on local crops and businesses. Knox Fireworks Gate Fees Exceed 2014 Total
City of Knox Independence Day fireworks gate fees, at the Starke County Airport, totaled $3,660, topping the $3,100 total from 2014. Knox Mayor Rick Chambers told the City Council when it met Tuesday evening, that the top total was the 2009 event, which was $3,750. Continue reading
Winamac Safe Routes to School Project Nears Completion
During the Monday evening Winamac Town Council meeting Town Manager Brad Zellers provided an update about the ‘Safe Routes to School’ Program. The SRTS program first started up in 2012 after a grant was received allowing for more than 2,000 feet of trail and ADA compliant sidewalks leading from the school to the downtown area to be put in place. Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson warns fly-by-night contractors may show up in hard-hit areas. Culver Considers Changes to Permit and Fee Process Following County Recommendations
Culver could soon change the way it charges for building inspections.
A special work session meeting was held to navigate a problem the Marshall County Commissioners have with the inspection process. Currently, a flat fee of $50 is being charged, but is not repaid if multiple inspections are required.

Cocaine Located After Arrest of Union Mills Man
A Union Mills man was arrested on Sunday when police allegedly located cocaine during a search of his person.
LaPorte Police officers were patrolling the area of 800 Clay Street when they spotted 25-year-old Stephen Murphy. He was said to be sitting on the front steps of the residence around 5:00 p.m. that afternoon.
Judge Resets Sentencing for Attempted Murder Defendant
Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall has reset the sentencing hearing for an attempted murder defendant with a fuzzy memory to give his attorneys more time to draft a stipulation agreement. It will detail the facts as defendant Benton Christopher Howard, 42, remembers them as to what happened at a home in the Parkview Heights area of Knox last Nov. 30. Howard is accused of critically stabbing Brandon Davidson, damaging his heart and collapsing his lung. He is set to plead guilty to a lesser battery offense. Continue reading
Knox City Council Approves Pay Raise
The Knox City Council has approved a 2-percent salary increase for employees in 2016. Council members and members of the Planning Commission, and the Zoning and Park Boards, dog catcher and crossing guard are not included in the increase. Continue reading
Pulaski County EMS Increasing Accountability with Narcotic Box Purchases
The Pulaski County Council agreed to transfer funds to help improve the security of certain EMS equipment.
$6,200 was requested to be transferred to help purchase new narcotic boxes. The current equipment used by Pulaski County allows for easy entrance to medicine that could be stolen or abused without being able to track the supplies.

Eastern Pulaski School Board Acknowledges Asbestos Removal
Renovations to the High School/Middle School building and Elementary School Building were discussed at length during the Eastern Pulaski School Board meeting Monday evening. Culver Town Council Recommends Flouride in Water Supply
Weeks of deliberating has led the Culver Town Council to decide on a major public health issue.
During last night’s meeting, a public hearing was held where Town Council members could hear from members of the public on whether to use fluoride in the Town’s water treatment process. Flouride is often used in the prevention of tooth decay.

Weeping Mulberry Tree to Stay in Culver Town Park
Monday night, the Culver Park Board approved the proposed plan to preserve a piece of park history. The weeping mulberry tree that was previously slated for removal will now remain in the park.
