Budget season is not quite here, but the Pulaski County Sheriff is looking to keep some of his deputies around a bit longer.
During last night’s Pulaski County Council meeting, Sheriff Jeff Richwine explained his solution to what he sees as a longevity problem in the department. By offering incentives for employees who stay onboard with the department, Richwine believes it will raise the quality of their enforcement, but also prevent turnover.

A Knox man who pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance will serve two years on probation for the offense. The Eastern Pulaski Community School Board met last night for their final meeting of the summer. The Board unanimously approved a number of items on the agenda including a base bid of approximately $2.6 million for the elementary school renovation contract. Continue reading

The Knox City Council has a meeting scheduled for tonight at 7 pm in City Hall. The Council will have their final reading of the 2016 Salary Ordinance. Treasurer Jeff Houston said this is in preparation for an upcoming budget hearing, “We have a budget meeting with the field representative from the Department of Local Government Finance on the 27th of July.” he said. An item tabled for several weeks will come back for additional comments during tonight’s Culver Town Council meeting.
Prior to the regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 EDT, the Town Council will hold a work session to discuss changes to its permitting process. The fees being charged were requested to be changed due to Culver reliance on Marshall County for certain inspections.
Many things cease during the summer months such as snow and school but there is one thing that never ceases and that is the need for blood donations. According to the American Red Cross every two seconds someone in the U.S needs a transfusion. Ancilla College officials have scheduled a blessing ceremony for the first residence hall to be constructed on the campus of the private, two-year school. Director of Marketing and Social Media Amanda Petrucelli says a public open house will also take place on Aug. 18 from 4 until 6 p.m. After the blessing, several dignitaries will speak. Low-income, uninsured or underinsured women in Starke and Marshall Counties may qualify for free screening mammograms and some diagnostic follow-up procedures. In order to cut down on paper costs the West Central School Board utilized chrome books during their last meeting. The school has just recently started using technology more often. Last year was the first year the school went one to one, meaning they provided chrome books to students fourth grade through twelfth grade and elementary school students in first,second and third grade. Participants took the checkered flag in the Hamlet 500, by walking, running, biking or otherwise recording 1,184 fitness miles. Arlene Noble notched 145 miles, and Team Bourff posted 235. The flood warning for the Tippecanoe River near Ora is in effect until further notice. Last night at 10 the river was holding steady at 12.1 feet, according to the National Weather Service. Flood stage is 12 feet. Minor flooding is occurring, and moderate flooding is forecast. Continue reading

Recent Purdue West Lafayette graduate Mandy Medbourn is the new health and human sciences extension educator for Starke and Pulaski County.
