The Starke County Building Corporation expects to pay the final contractor and subcontractor invoices for construction of the new jail in September. Inmates moved into the facility a few weeks ago, but some contractors are still finishing up final projects at the site east of Knox on State Road 8.
Representatives from The Skillman Corporation told building corporation members withholding final payment is a good incentive for contractors and subcontractors to wrap up loose ends. The contracts generally have a five-percent retainage, which can be a pretty significant amount of money depending on the scope of the work. The project will be under warranty for a year if any problems arise after the final bills are paid.
