The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department says a crash on U.S. 421 at County Road 1800 South near LaCrosse closed the road for about an hour on Friday.
According to information provided by the Department, a semi-tractor trailer was traveling Northbound on U.S. 421 when the driver allegedly became distracted. Officers on scene report that the driver of the semi-tanker truck was trapped inside the vehicle, but was extricated by the Lacrosse Fire Department.
A medical helicopter was been called to the scene for assistance. The driver was flown to a South Bend hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department says U.S. 421 between Highway 30 and State Road 8 has been cleaned-up and investigated, but is now open to traffic. The Sheriff’s Department says the semi-trailer tank is still overturned in the ditch. A hazardous materials team is working to clean-up the site.
U.S. 421 is expected to close again around 5:00 p.m. once the scene has been cleared of chemicals to right the truck for removal.
