Starke County Park Board members are encouraged to attend the next county drainage board meeting to discuss their concerns about the marsh in the Starke County Forest. Board member Debbie Mix told the commissioners park board members are looking at other sources of grant funds to cover the cost of constructing a bypass ditch along the south end of the property to alleviate drainage issues. Fourth Candidate Files for Coroner Vacancy
A fourth Democrat has filed to run for Starke County Coroner. Starke County Democrats will caucus tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Knox VFW to choose a successor to Adam Gray. He was elected in November but stepped down recently due to work and family obligations. Continue reading
Winamac Desires Purchase of Unsafe Downtown Building
A building slated for demolition may be sold to the Town of Winamac.
The Pulaski County Commissioners heard the request at their meeting last night. The structure, located in the 200 block of West Main Street in Winamac, was deemed unsafe after problems with the structure as well as mold were located.

Local Officials Dedicate Reconstructed Intersection
Starke County Economic Development Foundation officials yesterday joined business and local government leaders to celebrate the completion of the road through the Knox Industrial Park. Thanks to their combined efforts, the intersection of Klockner Drive is wider between Culver Road and north of Pacific Avenue with new curbs in place. SCEDF Executive Director Charlie Weaver says the project has gotten more positive feedback than anything they’ve done in the past two decades. Continue reading

County Commissioners May Hire IT Director Tonight
The Starke County Commissioners are poised to hire a new information technology director for the county when they meet tonight. They interviewed prospective candidates to replace longtime director Joe Short during an executive session meeting last week. Short is leaving the county to take a job in South Bend. Continue reading
Winamac Lumber Repays Revolving Loan
A Winamac business has paid off a business loan to the Pulaski County Revolving Loan Fund a year ahead of schedule. The county loaned $100,000 to All Seasons Home Center manager Kyle Kruzick and local contractor Phil White in September of 2011 to operate a home improvement store in the All Seasons buildings. The loan allowed the newly-established Winamac Lumber Yard to buy fixtures and equipment from All Seasons.
On Jan. 1, 2013 White and his wife bought out Kruzick’s share of the company and later purchased the property from his family. Continue reading

Starke County Youth Club Receives Gift from Golden Living Center
The Starke County Youth Club can continue its efforts to provide quality after school programs to local students thanks to a local business. The nonprofit recently received a $1,000 award from the Golden Living Center Community Support Initiative. SCYC Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the organization has been delighted to perform service learning projects in partnership with Golden Living Center. The North Judson-San Pierre High School athletic department is a little bit richer, and WKVI Sports Director Nathan Welter is very sparkly after yesterday’s homecoming pep rally. He’s a Knox graduate known for looking for NBA expert picks and winning big. This time however, he made a different kind of wager with news director Mary Perren, a N.J.-S.P. graduate on the outcome of last week’s game. North Judson won, so Welter had to pay up.
