The Indiana Department of Correction’s working to keep kids safe this Halloween. The Parole Services Division is teaming up with local agencies for the tenth annual Operation Safe Halloween.
As part of the initiative, paroled sex offenders throughout the state will be subject to a special curfew and restrictions during local trick-or-treat hours tomorrow. Sex offenders will have to go to a mandatory meeting, turn in safety plans for the evening, or stay at home and not pass out candy. Those remaining at their home have been advised to turn off outside lights during trick-or-treating and not to display Halloween decorations. Additionally, some will post signs saying they’re not giving out candy. All sex offenders might also receive unannounced compliance checks and home visits.
To know which houses to avoid, parents can check their county’s sex offender registry. You can also sign up for e-mail notifications, telling you when an offender moves within a specified radius of a particular address.
