The Winamac Town Council approved the $1.4 million 2016 budget during its meeting Monday. They also adopted an ordinance implementing net metering for the town’s electric customers who generate their own electricity using solar or wind power.
The system lets customers sell the power they produce back to the town through the use of a special meter that not only monitors how much power’s being used but also how much is being sent out. Town manager Brad Zellers says the new ordinance places a limit of ten kilowatts on the amount of power that customers can sell to the town. Customers taking part in the system will also have to pay a deposit that will be used to cover the cost of the system.
