LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputies were at the scene of a vehicle crash when a second crash occurred near the site, causing multiple injuries.
The incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. on U.S. 20 just west of County Road 400 West. It is thought that an eastbound semi tractor-trailer rear ended a vehicle which caused a chain reaction crash. Five vehicles were involved in total including two semis.
LaPorte County authorities say that a 32-thousand pound coil of steel also broke loose from the initial semi-trailer.
According to a police report, a “Plan One” response was initiated. That saw four ambulances, police supervisors, and EMS administrators respond to the scene.
A six-year-old child and its mother were transported to South Bend for treatment. Others involved in the crash were taken to LaPorte County hospitals.
Roads were closed for a period with the help of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
