Most Road Work Suspended for Memorial Day Weekend, Some Restrictions Remain

The Indiana Department of Transportation is suspending most construction work on area highways over the Memorial Day weekend. INDOT spokesman Doug Moats says work on interstate highways and other major corridors will stop today at noon. It will pick up again Tuesday morning.

However, some restrictions will remain in effect over the weekend. At the I-94-U.S. 421 interchange near Michigan City, the ramp from northbound U.S. 421 to westbound I-94 will remain closed, as will the ramps from westbound I-94 to northbound U.S. 421 and southbound U.S. 421 to eastbound I-94.

Additionally, I-94 itself will be down to two lanes in each direction through the area. I-94 will also be restricted to two lanes in each direction from just east of the interchange with U.S. 35 and U.S. 20 to the Michigan state line. Three lanes will be open in each direction between state roads 49 and 51. I-94 will be free of lane restrictions between State Road 51 and the Illinois state line.

In the Chesterton area, State Road 49 will be restricted to one lane in each direction between the Indiana Toll Road and U.S. 12.
