‘Cemetery Crawl’ Planned for Culver Area

Residents have a chance to learn some local history by taking a tour of Culver-area cemeteries this month. The Marshall County Genealogical Society is organizing a “cemetery crawl” for Tuesday, June 21, and they’re inviting members of the public to join them.

Marshall County Museum Archive Manager Karin Rettinger says the event will include stops at five Union Township cemeteries, “This is the fourth such cemetery tour we’ve done, where we drive from one to the next and tell a history about each cemetery that we visit. We take along some food, and we have a picnic as we go. That’s provided by the genealogy society. It started out as a progressive picnic in the cemeteries and it somehow became a cemetery crawl.”

A carpool will set off from Plymouth around 4:45 p.m., from the city parking lot west of the Plymouth Public Library, but participants are invited to join the tour at any point. The Genealogical Society plans to stop at Burr Oak, Bucklew, Poplar Grove, Culver Masonic, and Washington/Lawson cemeteries, with each stop lasting around 45 minutes.

Rettinger says during that time, a brief presentation will be given by Marshall County Museum Research Assistant Anita Kopetski, “She’ll be doing about a five-minute history of each cemetery while we’re there, talking about Civil War veterans and anybody famous buried there.”

Reservations are not required to join the tour, but those wishing to take part in the picnic are being asked to contact Rettinger at the museum by calling 574-936-2306, so organizers know how many refreshments to prepare. Driving tour maps are available at the Marshall County Museum in Plymouth.
