Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a drowning that occurred last night in Lake Michigan. Emergency personnel responded to a report of two boys struggling in the water at Washington Park in Michigan City just after 6 p.m.
One of the youngsters was able to reach the nearby break wall and pull himself to safety. The other boy, 14-year-old Mensha Travis of Michigan City, went under about 175 feet from shore, according to the incident report.
The Michigan City Fire Department, Michigan City dive team, the United States Coast Guard and Conservation officer divers began searching the water for Travis. They found him at 7:07 p.m. Travis was rushed St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
