Culver Seeks Input on Proposed Taxes

Customers of some Culver businesses may soon be paying additional taxes. Town Manager Jonathan Leist says a couple new taxes are under consideration. “One would be a one-percent food and beverage tax that would be applied just in the Town of Culver,” he says, “and the other would be a one-percent short-term lodging tax on things like house rentals, Airbnb, or vacation-rental-by-owner-type situations where they’re not currently paying the county innkeepers tax.”

Leist says residents and business owners will have the chance to learn more about the proposed taxes during a town council work session tomorrow evening at 6:30 at Culver Town Hall, “Kind of just an opening meeting to gather input and see where people are on it, kind of explain a little bit more about how it would work.”

He told the town council last week there’s more of a precedent for the food and beverage tax, which is currently used by several local governments around the state. On the other hand, the short-term lodging tax is a relatively new concept that Leist says hasn’t really been implemented yet in Indiana.
