A local teacher recently received a grant from the Northern Indiana Community Foundation to help fund an upcoming Indiana Bicentennial celebration. Donna Rowe teaches fourth grade at North Judson-San Pierre Elementary. That’s when students get their first formal exposure to Indiana history. Rowe says the $300 grant will offset the cost of a Bicentennial celebration on Dec. 9th.
Several community members are volunteering their time for the morning program.
“We’ll have Jane Ellen Felchuk do storytelling, Venita Cunningham has antiques. Mr. Cunningham, her husband, will be rope making. Mr. Altman’s doing some maps of Indiana,” Rowe told the school board last week.
She added the grant will cover the cost of the afternoon’s program, Musical Adventures in Indiana History, presented by Susan Ruth Brown.
“Miss Brown’s expressive vocal interpretations of songs, both familiar and less well-known, will cover different eras of our state’s development. She encourages audience participation,” Rowe said.
The N.J.-S.P. School Board last week formally approved the grant, which is their policy for any monetary donation to the school. Rowe adds members of the community are welcome to attend the program.
