A cockfighting raid in Medaryville Thursday has led to the removal of nearly 100 birds. According to the ASPCA website, investigators found roosters living in makeshift cages.
Many of them didn’t have access to enough food and water. Dead birds were also found. Investigators also allegedly found cockfighting paraphernalia, according to the ASPCA. These included long, dagger-like gaffs designed to increase injury during cockfighting, as well as performance-enhancing supplements.
The ASPCA is helping the Indiana Gaming Commission collect evidence and conduct medical checkups. They’re also assisting with transporting the birds to a temporary shelter set up at Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.
Indiana Gaming Commission Superintendent of Law Enforcement Rob Townsend says stopping animal fighting and the illegal gambling that comes with it are top priorities for the Gaming Commission. He also encourages members of the public to let them know if they suspect cockfighting is taking place.
