A rural LaPorte County resident allegedly led police on a high-speed chase, before apparently crashing the car and suffering serious injuries. Shortly after 1:00 Friday morning, a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted an orange Nissan 350 Z traveling north at a high rate of speed on U.S. 421.
The car reportedly turned west on County Road 400 North and allegedly sped up when the officer activated his emergency lights and siren. When the car reached Porter County Line road, it reportedly disregarded the stop sign and turned south. At one point, the car was being paced at 113 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, according to police.
After the deputy lost sight of the car, a state trooper briefly picked up the pursuit before losing the car as well. Officers located what was left of the Nissan 350 Z near County Road 50 North on the west side of County Line Road.
It took Porter County Sheriff’s K-9 Fury to locate the driver, Blake Konkey-McCarty, 22, of rural LaPorte County, about 50 yards away from the crash site. Konkey-McCarty appeared to be seriously injured and was taken by helicopter to a trauma center at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
A blood test determined that Konkey-McCarty’s blood alcohol content was 0.08 percent. Several criminal charges are being filed, including two counts of Operating While Intoxicated, Resisting Law Enforcement, Reckless Driving, and Driving While Suspended.
