A family driving through LaPorte County ended up with a wild turkey stuck in the windshield of their rental vehicle Tuesday morning. Deputies with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office believe a black GMC Yukon was heading westbound on U.S. 20 near Wilhelm Road when it hit a large tom turkey that was flying across the road. Officers say the turkey broke the glass and became lodged right in the middle of the windshield. The rental company immediately contacted an auto glass repair company.
The family was reportedly returning to O’Hare Airport after visiting the University of Notre Dame, where their daughter had recently been accepted. They got some minor cuts from the glass, but refused medical treatment.
While vehicle versus turkey crashes are rare according to the Sheriff’s Office, mating season means more turkeys are being seen close to roadways.
