The cause and origin of a weekend fire that destroyed a downtown Winamac building remain under investigation. Winamac Fire Chief Brian Guzman says an investigator from the state fire marshal’s office has been contacted. The Winamac Volunteer Fire Department responded around 9 a.m. Saturday to 109 South Logan Street and spotted black smoke billowing from the building owned by Jerry Freeman.
Firefighters from Star City, Francesville, Kewanna, Monterey, Bass Lake, Knox, Buffalo and North Judson assisted in fighting the fire. Guzman says buildings on Main Street occupied by CPA Sue Peppers and attorney John Kocher sustained smoke damage.
One firefighter was treated and released at Pulaski Memorial Hospital for a minor injury. The fire departments cleared the scene around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
