Bike and River Transportation Projects Moving Ahead in Pulaski County

Pulaski County’s efforts to create a system of bike routes are moving ahead. The project has been in the works for over a year, as part of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs’ Hometown Collaboration Initiative. But progress was delayed, while the county waited for permission to run the bike routes on state highways.

Last week, Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer told the county commissioners that process is nearly complete. “We just got one of the two INDOT permits that we needed to finish that up,” he said. “There are two places where we actually have short bits of the routes on the highway to get from point A to point B. That’s a lot harder than working with county highway.”

Meanwhile, the county’s also working on efforts to improve water transportation. The CDC has been working on an “Adopt a River” program, to keep the Tippecanoe River clean as more people continue to use it. “We have ordered the trash receptacles that are going to go out to each of the state ramp sites,” Origer said. “We’re working on coordinating getting people to adopt those, businesses and residents. Signs are being made. We have the sign posts. Now we just have to wait for the final approval from DNR to install those.”

The signs will explain proper river etiquette to visitors.
