LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Releases More Information on Three Weekend Crashes

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is still putting the pieces together, after a series of crashes kept deputies busy over the weekend. On Sunday, police responded to County Road 950 West, after a vehicle apparently crashed into a barricade where the road dead ends at Interstate 94. A man with serious head injuries was found lying next to the car.

Police have now identified the man as Maurice Edmond, 33, of Michigan City. But officers believe Edmond was not the driver and his injuries were not caused by the crash. Instead, investigators believe whoever did crash the car also battered Edmond afterward.

Detectives say they’ve developed a person of interest. Meanwhile, Edmond has been released from IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office has also identified the mother and son who were injured after their car was struck by a train Saturday night at the CSX railroad crossing at Range Road and 700 South. Police say Crystal Hill, 37, of Kingsford Heights was driving the 2006 Chrysler. Her passenger has been identified as six-year-old Jacob Hill. Both remain hospitalized at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, according to police.

Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office continues looking for the driver who allegedly hit a bicyclist on State Road 2 Saturday morning. Police believe the cyclist, Gregory Thompson, 56, was struck by a green pickup truck. It reportedly left the area heading eastbound on State Road 2, east of LaPorte.

Investigators are looking to see if any local businesses have video of Thompson or the truck. Officers say Thompson’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. Anyone with information is asked to call the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office at 219-326-7700.
