Starke County Household Hazardous Waste Days Coming Up

Starke County residents can dispose of their household hazardous waste Friday and Saturday at the county highway garage north of Knox.

Friday’s collection event will take place from 3 until 5 p.m. Residents can dispose of up to four tires for free over the course of the two-day event. Any tire that’s 54 inches or larger must be quartered, or a $75 fee per tire will be charged.

Televisions can also be disposed of for $20 per set during both days. Appliances can be dropped off for free without limits. Residents are limited to disposing of one computer monitor each but can get rid of as many CPUs, keyboards and printers as they want.

Saturday collection times are from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Additional items will be accepted Saturday, including some medications. However narcotics and controlled substances must be disposed of at either the Starke County Sheriff’s Office or the Knox Police Department. Both have drop boxes in their lobbies.

Residents can get rid of unlimited quantities of household hazardous waste on Saturday. However, it must not include commercial or industrial waste.

Latex paint is not a hazardous waste, and it will not be accepted. Remove the lid or add kitty litter to allow it to dry out and put it out with your household trash.
