Winamac Town Hall may soon be more accessible to people with disabilities. During last week’s town council meeting, council member Alvin Parish asked about installing an automatic sliding door on the front of the building.
The way the entrance is currently set up, the door is set back into the building. “I just noticed, especially in the fall, that place is full of leaves,” Parish said. “You open the door, and they all blow in the office.”
The town is currently in the process of fixing the front of the town hall, after a car crashed into it a few months ago. Council member Judy Heater agreed that now would be a good time to upgrade the entrance. “But if we’re going to do it, we need to do it actually handicap accessible, which would mean you could push a thing and the door would open,” she said. “And we need to do that because if we don’t, one of these days they’re going to make us, and we could do it now.”
Town Manager Brad Zellers agreed to gather some information for next month’s council meeting.
