O-D to Take Part in Summer Food Program, School Board Approves Student Meal Procedures

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation will be offering free meals to children 18 and younger over the next couple weeks. The school will be taking part in the USDA Summer Food Service Program from Monday, July 24 through Friday, August 4. That coincides with the corporation’s Jump Start summer school program.

O-D Food Service Director Jeff Messer says breakfast will be served from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be available between 11:00 and 11:40 a.m. Adults may purchase breakfast for $1.75 and lunch for $3.00.

Superintendent Don Harman says Oregon-Davis is also putting procedures in place to make sure students get fed once the school year begins. “We have an alternative lunch,” he explains. “So if a student comes and doesn’t have their lunch, we will give them an alternative lunch.” Additionally, if a student racks up $10 in meal charges, the school will then notify their parents.

Harman says those procedures were officially approved by the school board Monday. He explains that schools are being urged by the federal government to have a formal policy in place.
