A new Pulaski County Commissioner has been selected. Mike McClure was chosen during a Republican Party caucus Tuesday. It took a couple rounds of voting to narrow down the field of nine candidates that included a mix of current and former elected officials, as well as a few self-proclaimed non-politicians.
During his speech to precinct committee members, McClure said that he was no stranger to local politics. “I was a county councilman for eight years. I was a precinct committeeman for 12 years. I was the county Republican chair for six years. So I guess that makes be a politician,” he joked. “But I am what I am.”
A big priority McClure mentioned was helping local businesses. “I think we’ve got to be real good to the businesses that we already have here,” he said. “Some of them are having trouble getting help. We’ve got to watch what kind of business we bring in. We’ve got to bring in affordable businesses that our structure will handle. We can’t just keep bringing in a big steel mill or grinding mill like they did in White County and have that kind of blight, but we need to be positive.”
McClure will serve as District 3 commissioner through the end of 2018, filling the opening created by the resignation of Bud Krohn Jr.
