Eastern Pulaski is the latest school corporation to agree to take part in the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation. Its goal is to help underprivileged students with the cost of field trips, school supplies, and other minor expenses that may otherwise be out of their families’ reach. On Monday, the school board agreed to allow Eastern Pulaski’s three principals to work with the foundation to help direct grant money to students in need.
While explaining the foundation to board members, Harold Welter said that there are a lot of scholarships for underprivileged kids, but few resources to help with immediate needs. He explained the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation aims to fill that gap. Rather than giving money directly to teachers or families, Welter said each school will act as a pass-through organization, allowing principals to verify that grants are being used properly.
Eastern Pulaski School Board President Joe Cunningham voiced his support for the program. “Personally, I think it’s a great idea, and I’d like to extend our hand in any way we can to help with this cause,” he said. “You have our blessing, Harold.”
Eastern Pulaski is the third school corporation to partner with the Cheryl Lyn Welter Family Charitable Foundation, after Knox and West Central. Welter said he plans to work with nine school districts in the local area, but he said the overall goal is to help students wherever there’s a need.
