A Tuesday morning crash east of North Judson reportedly ended with a 72-year-old man being thrown from his SUV. Officers with the Starke County Sheriff’s Department say it happened around 8:30 near the intersection of State Road 10 and State Road 39 North.
Police believe Thomas Zimmerman, 72, of North Judson was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer south on State Road 39 when he failed to yield to a 2011 Mazda M3S heading west on State Road 10. The vehicles reportedly collided in the intersection, causing them to spin out of control and leave the roadway on the north side. Officers say the Explorer overturned in the process, ejecting Zimmerman, who was not wearing a seat belt.
He was flown from the scene to a trauma center in Illinois. Police say the driver of the Mazda, Donald Doyle, 55, refused medical treatment.
Starke County Sheriff’s Deputies, Starke County EMS, and the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department all responded to the crash.
