Hardware Store Owner Killed in LaPorte House Fire

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man killed in a LaPorte house fire Thursday morning. Charles Mares, 67, is believed to have died of smoke inhalation, according to LaPorte County Coroner Bob Cutler.

Firefighters reportedly found Mares lying about 10 feet from the door. They were not able to resuscitate him. Officials with the Sheriff’s Office say Mares owned a hardware store in New Carlisle.

Investigators believe the fire may have been caused by a clothes dryer in the laundry room. Police do not suspect foul play.
