At Monday night’s Winamac Town Council meeting Town Marshal Mike Buchanan announced his resignation to council members.
He said the resignation will go into effect on July 1st. The council thanked him for his years of service to the community and commended him for the great work he’s done as the head of the Winamac Police Department.
Marshal Buchanan didn’t have any suggestions for his replacement but he did recommend adding Reserve Officer Alec Berger to the full-time force to replace whoever takes over as town marshal. He said Berger has shown interest and there’s a consensus from other police officers that he would make a good fit for the department. Council members said they would take that recommendation under advisement.
They also agreed to hold interviews on Monday, February 19th at 6 p.m. in order to find eligible candidates to fill Buchanan’s position. Whoever is chosen will shadow Marshal Buchanan during his final month in order to get a feel for the job and all the responsibilities it entails.
The interviews will be held at the Winamac Utilities Complex and they are only open to current officers on the Winamac Police Department. They will begin taking applications to fill the open patrolman position at a later date, once an officer is selected to fill the Town Marshal position.
