Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston alerted city council members of a number of outstanding checks that had to be addressed prior to March 1st.
During Tuesday night’s Knox City Council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Houston explained that state statute requires him to make a list of any checks written by the city that have not been cashed for over 2-years.
He had to include the number of the check, the name of the payee and the amount and then all of that had to be submitted to the fiscal body.
Houston explained, “So it’s a total of four-hundred eighty-one fifty-seven, we will receipt it back in. They will not be able to cash the checks. According to state statute they cannot, banks won’t cash them now after two years.”
Though Houston didn’t need the council to take any action, he said he wanted them to be aware of the process and wanted them to know that money would be coming back to the city. Houston took all the necessary steps to have those checks dealt with prior to the March 1st deadline.
