The Oregon-Davis School Corporation is putting the finishing touches on its plan for the next five years. A strategic action plan for the years 2018 through 2023 was presented to the school board on first reading Monday by Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “What I’ve tried to do is put a plan in place, just so we can explain to our patrons, so we as the board kind of know what our vision is for our student body and then also know where, financially, we’re going with our facilities,” he explained.
Harman said a strategic action team made up of parents, community members, staff members, administrators, and teachers has been meeting monthly to work on the plan.
The first part highlights O-D’s motto, vision, mission, and core values. Harman said it also sets achievement goals. “Our achievement goals might be lofty, but we decided it’s 100 percent,” he explained. “When you look at graduation rate, you don’t say, ‘We want 90 percent of students graduating,’ because then you say, ‘What 10 percent are you giving up on?’ Our belief is we want 100 percent achievement.”
The rest of the plan lays out a road map for facility improvements over the next five years. “What we did is we just started looking at big-ticket items,” Harman said. “For example, we have on there that we need to address our sidewalks over the next four to five years. Obviously, that might be in different sections, if you will. We need to prioritize. We don’t have enough funds to replace all of the broken sidewalks, curbs. To me, in my opinion, a big priority would be the steps going into the main athletic area in the high school. If you look, the other steps are crumbled, and it’s not safe.”
Harman said Oregon-Davis is also looking into replacing the digital devices used by students and upgrading the press box at the baseball stadium. He added that by identifying the school corporation’s needs, community members may be willing to donate items to help out.
The Oregon-Davis School Board will review the proposed Strategic Action Plan, before it comes up for final approval next month.
