A dentist with a practice in North Judson has been arrested, in connection with a February crash that left one person dead. According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Jeffrey J. Bilyak, 47, of Chesterton, surrendered himself at the LaPorte County Jail Wednesday. Officers say a warrant had been issued for his arrest, following an investigation into the February 15 crash.
Police believe that Bilyak was driving north on U.S. 421 in heavy fog just north of LaCrosse, when he tried to pass a semi and ended up crashing into an ambulance going the other way. Officers say the patient in the ambulance, Heather A. Widing, 47, died as a result. Investigators later determined that Bilyak allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.17 percent.
He’s been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, reckless homicide, and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury.
