The Town of Hamlet may be looking to adjust its insurance policies, after the town ended up being on the hook for nearly $28,000 in repair bills for a January water main break.
The town council discussed the issue with an insurance representative Wednesday. “The reason why it was not covered is because your underground flutes, drains, or underground pipes have to extend within a thousand feet from a covered property,” she explained. “However, the location out there, when I drove out there, the adjuster drove out there, is nowhere near any covered property of the [town] right now.”
According to Farmers insurance reviews, the insurance representative said she’s come up with a way to cover more of the pipes by adding fire hydrants onto Hamlet’s insurance policy, “That would extend any current drains or flutes that you guys have anywhere near them, within a thousand feet, to be covered later, in a point in time.” Town officials noted that it might be beneficial to insure the fire hydrants, to cover damage caused by vandalism or vehicle accidents.
The insurance provider has also offered to cut its rate by $1,200, to make up for the frustration caused by the water main break not being covered. The insurance representative said that even if the fire hydrants are added to the policy, the town would still see an overall savings. Council President Dave Kesvormas said he was happy with the insurance company’s response, and council members agreed to consider the proposal.
