A North Judson resident recently approached Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe to discuss a potential land sale that could help the town expand the Highland Cemetery.
During a town council meeting in May, Rowe noted that there were less than 20 grave plots remaining in Highland Cemetery and told council members that they should start considering their options about what to do there.
He told members that moving across a highway or county road would require them to establish a whole new cemetery so he proposed expanding by acquiring some neighboring land instead.
The option of retiring the cemetery was also brought up, however, most of the council members did not approve of that idea.
Clerk-Treasurer Rowe reports that he was recently contacted by property-owner Marie Buvis about a piece of land she has to the West side of the cemetery. Rowe said they just had an informal, preliminary discussion about it but she did indicate that she’s interested in the possibility of selling the adjacent land to the town.
The matter was mentioned during last Monday’s town council meeting but no official actions were taken. Rowe added that it is likely that other town officials will meet with Buvis in the near future to further discuss the potential land acquisition.
