A reminder about the importance of staying on schedule when it comes to budget matters was provided at Tuesday night’s Knox City Council meeting.
Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston alerted members that the budget process is currently in underway. He noted that the first step is to balance out the month of June and then come mid-July, he will meet with a field representative from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
Houston mentioned when he meets with the DLGF field rep they will discuss preliminary information such as expected revenue and expenditures, as well as the budget calendar. He said once the calendar is established, it’s important to stay on track with it.
“I tell the council this every year, it’s like a broken record, we have to stick to the calendar.” Houston explained, “You don’t want to throw off the calendar because things have to be advertised, you have to wait so many days between meetings so be prepared to make decisions as we go along.”
Clerk-Treasurer Houston will continue to include relevant budget information in his reports to the council as the process moves along.
